That Mack and Nan have a good relationship with God and how bad things can happen to good people. Also how God wants to have a relationship with us. This is shown by Papa's note and that God wants us to be happy and wants to help us with our earthly problemes.
My interpretation of the book is that Mack's faith journey has had its "ups and downs" throughout his life. His faith life was going fine until Missy was taken, and then he began to question God. It continued to plummet through his life until he received the letter. Now it is constantly changing, as he is beginning to believe that he is actually talking to God, but is not for sure. Hopefully he will become even closer to God as the novel progresses.
Response to RJ: I agree that now the two of them have a good relationship with God. It hasn't always been that way however, as Mack strayed away for a while, but overall they do have a good relationship.
Mack had great faith up until he saw Missy's bloodstained dress in the shack. At that point he left his faith and the great sadness fell upon him. This is an important lesson for Mack. Things will only get worse when you turn away from God.

Since Mack's own father was a terrible one I don't think Mack got very close to God in general. Then when Missy was taken he reached an all time low. That's when God sent Mac the note. Now it seems Mac is closer to God then almost anyone (excluding Jesus).
In response to Jake: I agree that Mack left his faith altogether and that didn't help him at all. However I disagree that Mack had a great faith. It seemed to me that his faith was hanging by a thread and Missy dying was the final straw.
In response to Caleb: In this last reading for the first time Mack was able to call God "Papa". This shows a tremendous leap towards God with his faith so I agree that Mack has become closer to God than anyone other that Jesus.

Mack fixed his relationship with God. When you have faith in God, you should know that everything will be okay.
